UDSL Alumnus Defends Former Liberian President against 11 War Crimes Charges
Charles Taylor, the former president of Liberia, has been a central figure in the last two decades of West African turmoil. His larger-than-life rise to and fall from power includes a bloody coup, exile, escape from a Massachusetts prison, guerilla warfare, victory through popular election, and an eventual ousting resulting from international pressures. He was detained by the UN-backed Special Court for Sierra Leone last year after a period of enforced exile in Nigeria and is currently on trial at The Hague, the first African head of state to be brought before an international court on war crimes allegations. He is accused of fueling a civil war in neighboring Sierra Leone and encouraging murder, mutilation, rape, gun running, diamond smuggling, the conscription of child soldiers, and cannibalism. UDSL alumnus Morris Anyah (’96) is a member of his defense counsel and recently shared his thoughts on the case with the Dayton Docket during a two-week judicial recess.
