News and Events UDSL Announces the Project for Law and Business Ethics & Upcoming Symposium The University of Dayton School of Law is excited to announce the Project for Law and Business Ethics, created this year for the purpose of research, teaching, and scholarship relating to ethics in the business world. Program Enrolls Students with Big Ideas This fall, the School of Law launched a new graduate program, the Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Intellectual Property and Technology Law, which allows students who already hold a J.D. to combine a foundation in traditional legal theory with contemporary legal issues examining how technology is commercialized and rapidly integrated into our society. The first class of LL.M. students is small – it comprises only two – but the innovative ideas these students have for how to use their graduate degrees are gigantic. Read this story
UDSL Alumnus Tim Young Appointed Ohio Public DefenderWhen Timothy Young graduated from the University of Dayton School of Law in 1992, his classmates voted him the most likely to become a criminal defense lawyer. “I think they knew me better than I knew myself,” said Young, who was appointed the new public defender for the state of Ohio in September. Read this story What Can Law Schools Do Better? Two independent studies on legal education published their findings in March. While employing different methodologies, their recommendations were almost identical: Law schools over-emphasize teaching legal analysis and doctrinal knowledge and virtually ignore teaching professional skills and values. Dean Lisa Kloppenberg tackles this concern in her article, We Need to Address the Gulf between Legal Education and Practice, which appears in the latest issue of The Complete Lawyer. Read this story UDSL Alumna Takes Law Practice into Cyberspace UDSL Alumna Stephanie Kimbro (c/o ’03) has turned the practice of law into a virtual reality. In June of 2006, Kimbro and her husband, Benjamin Norman, a computer programmer, launched her online practice in North Carolina, the only one in the state, according to the North Carolina Bar Association. Read this story Red Mass Homily Teaches Humility, Invocation, and Cooperation Father Chris Wittmann, S.M., led the Dayton legal community in a Red Mass held at the U.D. Chapel on September 22. The Red Mass is offered to invoke divine guidance and strength for all involved in the administration of justice. The custom originated in Europe in the 13th century and today is practiced in dioceses throughout the United States. This was the second year that the University of Dayton School of Law has hosted a Red Mass. The text to Fr. Wittmann’s homily can be read here. Brief Mentions ![]() Fran Evans, Todd Carver, Jeff Morris, and Dean Lisa Kloppenberg at the 18th annual Carl Kessler Scholarship Golf Tournament, held on September 28, 2007. Professor Rick Perna has agreed to become Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in January 2008. He has significant experience in the position and is very familiar with academic matters, budgetary matters, and strategic planning. He is enthusiastic about the demanding work ahead of him and is committed to working with faculty and staff for the good of all in our community. The School of Law is thankful for the hard work, good will, and genuine care for the academic mission exhibited by Associate Dean Harry Gerla over the past 20 months. UDSL’s Project for Law and Business Ethics will host a symposium, Unearthing Corporate Wrongdoing: Detecting and Dealing with Ethical Breaches in the Business World, on Thursday, October 25, 2007, at UDSL. CLE approval is pending for 4.5 hours of general credit and the symposium is being offered to the public at the low cost of $25 per person.
