On September 24, more than 150 people attended the Red Mass ceremony at the University of Dayton Immaculate Conception Chapel. Daniel Pilarczyk, archbishop of Cincinnati, celebrated the Mass that the legal profession holds annually nationwide to request guidance from the Holy Spirit for all who seek justice. Father James Heft, S.M., president of the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies at the University of Southern California, was the homilist.
The Red Mass is named for the red garments worn by the celebrants to signify the fire of the Holy Spirit's guidance for government officials, lawyers, judges, and all who pursue justice in their daily lives. This was the first time the University of Dayton School of Law has hosted a Red Mass. It was sponsored by the School of Law and Catholic judges of the Dayton area.
