As the first point of contact in the Career Services Office, Rita Barney constantly interacts with students, employers, and alumni. She helps students communicate effectively with potential employers while helping employers advertise legal job opportunities. Ms. Barney also assists the director, helps coordinate fall recruiting, and posts all part-time and full-time jobs.
Ms. Barney was already used to interacting with younger people when she came to the University of Dayton School of Law more than five years ago. She worked as a medical secretary in labor and delivery at Franciscan Medical Center for 13 years, until the hospital closed in 2000. She says working third shift at the hospital with young children at home was difficult, and she was attracted by the law school's nine-month position. "Even though they were getting older, I wanted to be home with my kids in the summer," she says.
When not spending time with college students, which she says always brightens her day, Ms. Barney enjoys outdoor activities like boating, water skiing, and golfing. She also likes to read and cross-stitch.
