"The Volunteer Student Law Project is an example of the solidarity UDSL has with the Greater Dayton community. This project allows law students to work with local attorneys to help solve the legal problems of indigent community members. By doing so, students gain the experience necessary to excel in a legal career. Through this service, UDSL strives to incorporate the friendly and diverse community of the law school into the Greater Dayton community."
~Matthew Feeney, Class of 2008
The students of the University of Dayton School of Law have long been known for their passionate dedication to working as a community to help the poor and the marginalized. Whether it’s preparing a meal for the homeless, creating a fundraiser for victims of a hurricane, or assisting a practitioner in providing pro bono services, UDSL students are always ready to lend a hand.
You are invited to join our efforts by signing the UDSL Commitment to Community pledge in which you promise to complete at least 50 hours of pro bono work/community service over during your years at UDSL. Up to 10 hours of this total may come in the form of general community service work for organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Hospice, etc. The Office of the Dean of Students maintains a list of pre-approved programs, such as the VSLP, for which you may receive credit for pro bono efforts. New programs are always welcome! If you wish to have a pro bono program added to the list, speak with Dean Shaw.
UDSL honors students who make outstanding contributions in the areas of community service and pro bono work with a special “Pro Bono Commitment to Community Award.” Award winners receive a notation on their transcripts and are entitled to wear a special cord at graduation.
