Building a Community that Embraces Diversity
Bruno G. Romero is the Program Manager of the Interpreter Services Program at the Supreme Court of Ohio. Mr. Romero is responsible for developing resources, standards and procedures for the use of interpreters in Ohio courts. He also presents and coordinates trainings for interpreters and court personnel on language access matters. As part of the strategy to design and implement practical guidelines of operation for the use of court interpreters, Mr. Romero has developed a number of resources including a Report on the Use of Interpreters in Ohio Courts, Working with Foreign Language Interpreters in the Courtroom: A Bench Card for Judges, Working with Interpreters for the Deaf or Hard of Hearing Persons in the Courtroom and Interpreters in the Judicial System: A Handbook for Judges (forthcoming) to assist the courts in the recruitment, employment and qualification of interpreters.
Prior to managing the interpreter services program, Mr. Romero was a program manager in the Dispute Resolution Section also at the Supreme Court of Ohio. In this capacity, he developed court-annexed mediation programs, trained mediators and court personnel on mediation models, restorative justice methods and issues of diversity in dispute resolution.
Before coming to Ohio, Mr. Romero was a court interpreter for 5 years in the Sixth Judicial District of the New York State Unified Court System and a mediator and program coordinator at the Community Dispute Resolution Center in Ithaca, New York. He also worked as a bilingual legal assistant in El Paso, Texas for approximately 10 years. In all, his experience with program and policy development spans over 15 years.
Mr. Romero attended the University of Oregon and University of Texas at El Paso. He holds a B.S. in Economics and an M.A. in Labor and Policy Studies from the State University of New York.
