Hi, my name is Mark Munson. I am a 2L at UDSL and I moved to Dayton a year ago to pursue a goal that started out as an idea eighteen years ago. I grew up in Maryland outside Washington DC and made my way around the beltway ending up in Virginia, where I lived for fourteen years before moving to Dayton. I went to several different colleges before finally getting a business degree from the University of Maryland. It was a long process that took 9 years, the last two working full time and going to school full time. It was during my last semester that I first thought about going to law school. However, I continued working and for twelve years prior to law school did outside sales selling products in a construction-related industry. About five years ago, I met a guy at a BBQ who was working full time and going to law school part time and that really got me thinking about the idea. A few years ago my daughter was making her decisions about going to college and I started making plans that led me to Dayton.
I enrolled in the AEP program last year because it seemed like a smart thing to do having been out of school for so long. It was certainly one of the best decisions I could have made. The program helped tremendously with all areas of law school and I took advantage of every opportunity I could fit into my schedule. Because of the impact on me and the dedication of Professor Rucker and her staff, I decided to become a TA to help future UDSL students get the benefits of the AEP program.
I have many favorite quotes that I like. But there is one motto that means a lot to me that came via a fortune cookie from a takeout Chinese dinner about 4 years ago. It said, “Life to you is a bold and daring adventure.” Adventure typically meant to me something with serious risks like mountain climbing or sailing alone across the ocean. But adventure takes many forms. I took a big risk when I sold everything I had back in Virginia and moved to Dayton a year ago to attend UDSL. And last year was certainly an adventure with ups and downs and challenges to overcome. Although the next two years don’t have the same risk as last year, at this time I don’t know where I’ll be living or practicing law two years from now. So, the adventure continues and I’m excited by the possibilities. My interests outside law school typically involve outdoor activities. I love to travel and explore new places. I like to go hiking or bike riding. One of my goals is to get back into skiing and go out west to Colorado or Utah for a vacation. I really like to read and have done a lot of that with my leisure time this summer.
