Academic Probation
and Dismissal

Keller Hall staircase view from the fourth floor

Academic probation – At the completion of any term, any student who has a cumulative academic grade point average (GPA) that is not in good standing, but who is eligible to continue his or her studies, is on "academic probation." A GPA that is in good standing is defined as a 2.00 for students who entered UDSL before Fall 2007 and as a 2.20 for students who entered UDSL Fall 2007 or after. "Academic probation" status is an early warning of unacceptable performance and obliges the student to improve his or her performance or risk dismissal from school.

A student on probation incurs the following restrictions:

  • He or she may not hold any employment (whether compensated or not) without approval of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
  • He or she may not participate as an elective or appointive officer, or as a working member, of any student activity (whether or not for academic credit) without the written approval of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
  • He or she may not serve as a student member of a faculty committee.
  • He or she must register for not less than 12 credit hours during the third and subsequent terms of law study. There is no minimum load required during a summer term, however.
  • He or she may enroll only in "core" courses, that is, courses taken by one-half or more of law students before their graduation. Priority must be given to repeating required courses that the student failed previously. During any regular term, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs may approve the enrollment in non-core courses up to one-fourth of the student's credit hours for that term, upon good cause shown.
  • The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs is the academic advisor to all students on probation. Students are encouraged to consult with him or her for guidance and to explore possible remedial measures that may be available.

Academic dismissal – Students who fail to meet certain academic criteria as set out in the School of Law Policy manual are dismissed for academic reasons. Please consult the Policy Manual, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, or the School of Law Registrar for clarification of these policies.
