Disabling (or Enabling) an Internet Connection

All access to the UDSL network will be through wireless connections. If your computer has more than one connection type, you do not want to have more than one connection enabled at a time. This means that if you use a connection other than wireless at home, when you come to school you will have to disable the other connection and enable your wireless connection. You will have to do the reverse when you return home.

You may also choose to disable your wireless connection at other times so that your computer is not open to the network, for security purposes.

To Disable (or Enable) a Network Connection:

     1. Go to the Start Menu

     2. Select the Control Panel

     3. Double-click Network Connections

     4. Right-click the connection you wish to disable
         (or enable)

     5. Select disable (or enable)

Downloading and Uploading Files

“Downloading” is when you transfer a file from a remote computer to your computer via a network. “Uploading” is when you transfer a file from your computer to a remote computer via a network.

Note:  downloaded files can transmit viruses to your computer!  Make sure if you’re downloading a file it is from a trusted source and you know the contents of the file.

Logging off your computer and shutting down

You should always shut down your computer before putting it in your locker or bookbag or before moving it more than a few feet; this will ensure the safety of your data.

To shut down and power off your notebook, go to the Start Menu, click “Shut Down,” and select “Shut Down” from the dropdown menu.  Click “OK” to shut down.

If you want to be away from your computer for a moment but want to ensure that no one has access to your files, you can log off your computer but leave the computer turned on. It is only advisable to do this if the computer is physically secured (i.e. locked down with a cable), and if you have a strong password.  Read about strong passwords.

Accessing the Remote Desktop

UDSL provides every student with a Remote Desktop account and login.  Remote Desktop allows you to store and access your files on the UDSL network, use applications installed on the server (such as Word, Excel, and Internet Explorer), and print to the network printer using any computer with internet access.

You must log in to Remote Desktop when using the UDSL Computer Lab in the Law Library on the second floor.

To log in to Remote Desktop from a networked computer:

1. Open up the Start Menu and click “All Programs”

2. Select the “Accessories” program group

3. Go to “Communications”

4. Click the “Remote Desktop Connection” icon

5. Click on the “Options >>” button

6. Enter the following information under “Logon Settings”:
Computer: 131.238.103.192
Username: <Your Network Login Name>
Password: <Your Password>
Domain: <Leave Blank>

Note – For security reasons, do not check the box for “Save my password”

7. Click on the Local Resources tab.

8. Select the check box next to “Disk Drives,” so Remote Desktop can see the disk drives on your local computer and you can access files from there

9. Click on the General tab.

10. Click the “Save As…” button

11. Click the “Save” button in the file dialog box

12. Click “Yes” when prompted if you want to overwrite your “default.rdp” file

13. Click the “Connect” button after the remote desktop profile has been saved

14. Enter your username and password.

15. Click “OK”

Note – You are now connected to Terminal Services, your network drive space, and printers. Your local drives should also appear under “My Computer”
