On June 9, legal experts from across the nation gathered at the University of Dayton School of Law to present the 16th annual seminar in law and technology. This year’s program, “Significant Developments in Computer and Cyberspace Law,” drew a crowd of more than 100 legal professionals to campus to take part in a day full of presentations, in-depth panel discussions and breakout sessions on topics such as privacy and compliance issues, patent law, identity theft and intellectual property licensing.
Since technology regularly outpaces the law, conferences like this offer the opportunity to deal with complicated legal issues and questions that don’t always have definitive answers.
“The conference is a chance for people in my area of law to get together and kick around ideas, which is very important,” said Robert Lech, visiting professor of law and technology and one of the conference organizers.
Whether they are counseling corporations on privacy issues or taking on the latest generation of sophisticated cybercriminals, today’s attorneys need a forum for discussion, debate and sharing information. This seminar proved to be just that. Underlying legal principles and pertinent case law were discussed to help attorneys navigate through the rather murky legal waters that surround intellectual property, computer and cyberspace law.
