UDSL Holds a Red Mass for Dayton-Area Legal Professionals
The UD School of Law and Catholic judges of the Dayton area will celebrate a Red Mass at 5 p.m. Saturday, September 22, at UD’s Immaculate Conception Chapel. The Rev. Chris Wittmann, S.M., director of UD Campus Ministry, will celebrate the Mass, which is open to the public.

UDSL Alumna Heads to D.C. as Air Force Judge

Diana Dickinson, UDSL c/o 1989, is the first civilian Air Force Judge in military history.

In the 1960’s, the armed services of the United States made a change from using active duty military judges to using civilian ones. While there are several civilian Army and Navy judges on the Armed Services Board of Contract Appeals, there hasn’t been an Air Force judge on the board…until now. UDSL alumna Diana Dickinson is preparing to move from Dayton to Washington, D.C. in October to become the first civilian Air Force judge in U.S. military history.

UDSL Professor Models Service as President of the Board at The Other Place
The Other Place, Dayton’s only day shelter for the homeless, has moved locations three times, knocked down walls, remodeled, expanded, and opened a separate space for administrative offices, but still the homeless who use its services are outpacing its expansion. For Richard Saphire, UDSL professor and president of the board of directors at The Other Place, this growth is bad and good, representing both the increasing numbers of homeless on our streets and the increasing attention and support organizations like The Other Place are receiving.

Spotlight on Externships: Phil Cornelius
A chance meeting in the law library turned into a summer externship for UDSL student Phil Cornelius, which then turned into much more than an opportunity to practice professional lawyering skills - it developed into an offer for a job after he graduates this spring. His future employer, McNamee & McNamee, PLL, boasts that its attorneys bring unique backgrounds to their practice, and Cornelius says it was his prior experience in business and tax fields that made him a good fit with the firm.

The fall semester at UDSL began August, 27. Welcome, new students!

At the August ABA meeting in San Francisco Dean Lisa Kloppenberg moderated a panel for the Section on Legal Education on two recent reports calling for fundamental change in legal education.

The next Prospective Student Law Day will be held at Keller Hall on Saturday, September 22, 2007. The program will include information on taking the LSAT, financial aid, and a tour of the facilities. Call the Office of Admissions at 937-229-3555 for more information.

Professor Vernellia Randall has been selected as a Haywood Burns/Shanara Gilbert Awardee at the upcoming Northeast People of Color [NEPOC] Legal Scholarship Conference being held at the Southern New England School of Law from September 14-15, 2007.

UDSL alumna Joanne (Jocha) Ervin (c/o 1991) passed away after a brief illness on August 4, 2007 at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. She ran a successful law practice with a certification in labor and employment law in the Dayton area for 15 years, taught at UDSL as an adjunct professor, and was also a faculty member at Wright State University. Joanne was a member of many law organizations including the American Bar Association, the Ohio Bar Association, and the Dayton Bar Association, also serving in the D.B.A. Inn of Court.
