Well, imagine sitting through a half-day law lecture during a beautiful, sunny summer afternoon while outside, perched on top of Mount Solero, on the isle of Capri in Italy, learning comparative human rights law against a backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea, Mt. Vesuvius, and the limestone cliffs of the Italian coastline. Now that’s more like it. Such broad topics make for countless opportunities for UDSL students to enter a new writing contest and earn some recognition for their interests and studies. Read this story UDSL Alumni Events Bring Alums Together Across the Country UDSL alumni have settled far and wide, bringing the training and passion that began in UDSL classrooms to their diverse careers all over the country. According to January, 2007 data, the Dayton UDSL alumni chapter boasts the biggest pocket of law grads, nearly 1,100 (25% of all UDSL graduates). But there are also about 400 UDSL alums in Cincinnati, 200 in New York, 160 in the D.C. area, and just over 100 in Philadelphia. Professors Becky Cochran and Maria Crist recently presented “The ABA Site Visit: A Tale of Two Perspectives” at the 2007 Association of Legal Writing Directors (ALWD) Conference in Denver, Colorado (June 14-17). “We had a great turn out and much audience participation,” they said. The ThinkTV (Dayton’s PBS station) production Justice For All? won a regional Emmy award as best Interview/ Discussion program for 2006. More than 60 commercial and public broadcasting stations competed from a four-state region for the honor. Dean Lisa Kloppenberg and other members of the UDSL faculty consulted with ThinkTV to develop the content of the program. The University of Dayton School of Law recently was invited to be one of ten law schools (including Harvard and Vanderbilt) working on the next phase of the Carnegie Foundation's project on legal education. The School was honored with the invitation from Stanford Law School and the Carnegie Foundation to work on the future of law school curricula because it has been "in the vanguard" of recent curricular reforms with its Lawyer as Problem Solver program. UDSL alumna Janice Paulus (c/o ’85) passed away Friday, July 20, 2007 of complications from lung cancer. Janice practiced law in Sidney, OH from 1985-1987 after working as a law clerk in Sidney for four years. In 1987, she joined the Dayton, OH law firm of Coolidge, Wall, Womsley & Lombard Co., L.P.A. as an associate. She became a partner in 1991. The senior woman partner at Coolidge since 1992, Janice practiced commercial litigation law. UDSL alumnus Michael Joseph Guerra (c/o ’80), of Louisville, passed away Friday, June 29, 2007. He is survived by his wife Tracy (Rigsby) and three children. Michael led a rewarding career within the restaurant industry and spent the latter part as a successful entrepreneur. |
