Externship Program a Cornerstone of UDSL Experiential Education
University of Dayton School of Law students become capable, ethical lawyers through training they receive not just on campus, but around Dayton, around Ohio, and now all over the United States. In an effort to provide more real-world experience the School of Law recently implemented a new curriculum requiring all of its students to complete an unpaid externship prior to graduation.

Cinque Banquet Honors Minority Legal Pioneer
Members from the entire UD community gathered for the annual Joseph Cinque Award Banquet, held Thursday, April 12, 2007 at the UD Kennedy Union Ballroom.
This year’s award recipient was Attorney Alvarene N. Owens, who specializes in personal injury and wrongful death claims and is the president and CEO of Alvarene N. Owens Co, L.P.A. She was the first woman, first African American, and first minority to be appointed to the board of the Ohio Academy of Trial Lawyers.

UDSL Moot Court Team Wins 'Best Brief'
The Herbert Wechsler Criminal Law Moot Court Competition was held at the end of March in Buffalo, New York. The national competition hosted 24 teams, including the University of Dayton School of Law team of Heather Frank and Elisha Roberts, who took home the honor of “best brief.”

Brief Mention
Alumnus Jon D. Pels (’93) and his partner Lawrence Anderson of the Bethesda firm of Pels, Anderson, LLC have been selected by the Maryland Trial Lawyers Association as 2007 Trial Lawyers of the Year. They were selected for their contribution to the public interest by settling a case of precedential value, Ellerbe v. Chesapeake Mobile Homes, in which they recovered millions of dollars for low-income residents of improperly installed mobile homes, which, in turn, led to substantial changes in the way these homes are installed throughout the state.

2L Pete Christoff ran in the 111th Boston Marathon on April 16 and finished in 2:59.27. Good enough to place him in the top 10 for Dayton-area runners who participated, and for 907th place overall!

Professor Vernellia Randall will be honored with the Haywood Burns/Shanara Gilbert Award at the 2007 NEPOC Conference, which will be held at Southern New England School of Law September 14th and 15th. The annual awards are named in honor of former CUNY Dean Haywood Burns and Clinical Professor Shanara Gilbert, who both died tragically in a traffic accident in South Africa while working on the South African constitution. Nominees for the award are outstanding activist legal scholars who have contributed to their schools, communities, and to the greater legal academy of color.

This year’s School of Law commencement speaker is Judge Andrew S. Effron, United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Services. Judge Effron was appointed to the Court in 1996 by President Clinton. Judge Effron is a graduate of Harvard College, Harvard Law School, and the Army’s Judge Advocate General’s School.

To this year’s School of Law grads still in the midst of finals, graduation day (May 12) may seem a long way off. But before they know it their tassels will be turned and they will embark on their brilliant law careers (after all of them pass the bar on the first try, of course). It’s a good thing that the second week in May leaves just enough time between finals and ‘the real world’ to have a little fun.

UDSL welcomed first-year, summer-starter students for their first day of classes on Monday, May 7. A dinner that evening in the Barrett Dining Room of Kennedy Union gave all an opportunity to meet classmates, and greet some faculty and staff, as well.
