The Admissions office held a very successful Admitted Student Law Day at the end of June, the last that will be held before fall students begin their law classes at UDSL.
Out of the 120+ crowd that attended the day, 80 percent came to Dayton from out of town to take part in the program, said Tony Casillano, Assistant Director of Admissions and Financial Aid. Admitted students traveled from as far as New Mexico, New Hampshire, Virginia, Florida, Texas, and Toronto, Canada to see the UDSL campus.
Bringing admitted students physically onto campus is often what helps them decide to pursue their law education at UDSL Casillano said. “It is very beneficial in terms of seeing who is committed to coming to UD as opposed to those still testing the waters. Once they are here and see the facility and talk with current students, it’s a real selling point.”
Aside from learning about campus, financial aid, and housing opportunities, at admitted student law days attendees have the opportunity to talk informally over lunch with current students and professors, to learn about different academic programs - like the Program in Law and Technology and the Externship program, and to sit through a one-hour, mock law class.
About four admitted student law days are held every spring and summer, and about four prospective student law days are held every summer and fall. A diverse student law day will be held on October 13, 2007, to focus on minority and non-traditional students.
Casillano said that responses he received from those who attended June’s admitted student law day were very positive. “They were very happy they attended, and said it was a good opportunity to network with other inbound classmates.”
The next prospective student law day, titled “Thinking about Law School – The LSAT and More” will be held at Keller Hall on Saturday, July 21 from 8:45am – 2:30pm. The day’s program will feature a session on how to navigate the law school application process as well as some sessions about LSAT preparation.
