To this year’s School of Law grads still in the midst of finals, graduation day (May 12) may seem a long way off. But before they know it their tassels will be turned and they will embark on their brilliant law careers (after all of them pass the bar on the first try, of course). It’s a good thing that the second week in May leaves just enough time between finals and ‘the real world’ to have a little fun.
Earlier this semester, 3L Tom Schmitt, graduation coordinator, ran an online survey to determine which activities students had an interest in, and then organized the week to take advantage of group discounts and special deals. “That helped lower the cost to students, who are paying up front for most of these activities,” he said.
In following with tradition, the last day of exams will be marked with a dinner at an area restaurant. A dinner and a private comedy show with comedian Michael Loftus will be held at the Funny Bone, the new comedy club in The Greene. The evening will also include a power point slide show with pictures from the last three years, submitted by the graduates themselves. Graduates receive a substantially subsidized entry to the evening courtesy of the Student Bar Association. Additionally, an after party has been arranged on the balcony at Adobe Gilas', the bar next to Funny Bone in the Greene.
On Wednesday evening, the grads will take a bus to Argosy Casino riverboat, and then head out to the bars at Newport-On-The-Levee, (Hofbrauhaus, Bar Louie's) just across the river from Cincinnati.
On Thursday the grads will take in some baseball at an afternoon Reds game against the Houston Astros. Graduates receive a substantially discounted game ticket and concession stand coupon for a ball park hot dog and a pretzel, “and we'll be sitting on the Sun Deck in right field, a favorite spot of many fans,” Schmitt added.
Thursday night was left unscheduled to allow graduates to revisit their favorite bars on campus for a farewell tour, Schmitt said.
On Friday, The UDSL Graduating Class of 2007 will host a Baccalaureate Interfaith Prayer Service 5:00 p.m. in the University of Dayton Chapel. The Service will be followed by a wine and cheese reception on the East Lawn of the Law School at 6:00 p.m.
